From the Poetry Center Archives: Tomasz Różycki

0 From the Poetry Center Archives: Tomasz Różycki92Y Poetry: http://www.92y.org/Uptown/Tisch-Center-for-the-Arts/Unterberg-Poetry-Center.aspx?blog=92Ypoetry

Today’s video features “Maps,” an early poem by the evening’s second reader, Tomasz Różycki, who visited the Unterberg Poetry Center on March 28 for The Tenth Muse—an evening of readings by emerging voices curated by Adam Zagajewski.

Read in both Polish and English (with translator Mila Rosenthal reading her translation). Also read is an excerpt from Twelve Stations, a series of poems about Różycki’s hometown of Opole—”heroic city, thrice awarded the Silesian Order of Brilliance / and twice the Medal of the City of a Hundred Banks and One Bookstore!”—read by Różycki and a second translator, Bill Johnston.

A “vital new poet has emerged from the Polish language,” Zagajewski said of Różycki. His “poetry is serious, a private response to the historic moment.

NYC Subway directions?????

does anyone know how to get from the port authority to the guggenheim museum via subway? or bus?

Solomon R. Guhhehueim Museum is located at 5th Av & 89th St.

Fast approach will be:
Option 1:
Enter subway station at PABT, then walk along passegeway to Times Sq Station.
Take (S) to Grand Central or (7) two stops to Grand Central.
Take uptown (4)(5) express or (6) local to 86th St.

Option 2:
Fro Times Sq, take Queens-bound (N)(R)(W) to Lexington Av-59th St for uptown (4)(5) express on lower level or (6) local on upper level.

Option 3:
From 42nd St-PABT, take Queens-bound (E) to Lexington Av-53rd St. Walk through passegeway to uptown 51st St platform and take (6).

At 86th St, use exit by NE stairs, and make U-turn at Barbershop, you’ll be facing 86th St, and turn right and you`ll be walking west along 86th St until you see Central Park at 5th Av, then make right.

Fast and slow approach.
From 42nd St-PABT, take uptown (C) to 86th St.
Exit at SW exit stairs and turn right immedialey and eastbound M86 stop is right there at 86th St & Central Park West.
Take M86 bus to 84th St & 5th Av. Exit through the rear door, and walk north (away from Metropolitan Museum of Art) to 89th St.

the Metropolitan Museum of Art vs Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum vs the museum of modern art (MoMa)?

which which is better for architecture and sculptures?
any other museums/galleries in New York?

I don’t think the Guggenheim shows sculpture and you are not clear whether you mean the architecture of the place or shows elements of architecture. While the Guggenheim is striking as a building, like some other Wright buildings it is limiting in carrying out the purpose for which it was intended – in this case it lacks variety in its display spaces.

How did the dvlpmnt of isolated regions (Mesoamerica&Oceania) differ from the societies of Europe,Asia,Africa?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in isolation?

It’s different for every society, but there are some general trends.

Civilizations that were more connected to other ones generally had more trade, more prosperity, and more borrowing of ideas and technology.

Civilizations that were more isolated tended to have less development and prosperity, and were less able to trade goods and ideas with the rest of the world.

Some well-connected societies: Mesopotamia, Greece, northern India, Egypt. These societies, while all different, had a great deal of trade with their neighbors, lots of scientific development, and generally were more prosperous.

Some poorly-connected societies: Mayans, Tasmania, Japan in the sakoku period, Canary Islands. These societies generally had less trade with their neighbors, very little scientific development (or they even lost technology they once had, in Japan and Tasmania), and were less prosperous.

Generally speaking, it would be better to live as a common person in a well-connected society than in a poorly-connected one. I don’t see any real advantages to having a society in isolation. All of the societies that were very isolated from the rest of the world either broke apart into terrible infighting or stagnated and were conquered by outside societies (or both!).

Chopin Waltz op. 62, no. 2 in B min. – Elisha Abas

0 Chopin Waltz op. 62, no. 2 in B min. Elisha AbasWaltz op. 62 no. 2 in B minor by Frédéric Chopin
Elisha Abas, piano
Recorded live in New York City

From a recital in New York City of Israeli concert pianist Elisha Abas. He was a prodigy who, during his youth, shared the stage with Leonard Bernstein and Isaac Stern at Carnegie Hall, and performed in a televised concert with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta. During a visit to Israel, Artur Rubinstein encountered the young Elisha and, upon hearing him play, sought to mentor him. Elisha still has the engraved watch Rubinstein gave him to commemorate their rapport. But, despite this brilliant beginning, Mr. Abas has only recently returned to the world of music after wanting to withdraw from it at age 14. Among other endeavors, he has been a professional soccer player in Israel’s Premiere League, and he is also the great-great grandson of Russian composer and pianist Alexander Scriabin. He was a life-long student of the legendary Israeli piano teacher Pnina Salzman, who was a pupil of Alfred Cortot. Mr. Abas’s Russian debut took place in Saint Petersburg in October 2008. Recently, his recording of Brahms’s First Piano Concerto was released and he performed in Caracas with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela. In April 2012 he will perform Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto at New York’s 92nd Street Y.
