David Grossman: To the End of the Land

0 David Grossman: To the End of the Land92Y Poetry Center: http://www.92y.org/shop/category.asp?category=888Unterberg+Poetry+Center888&ev_ads=YouTube_PoetryCenter

From the Poetry Center Archive: David Grossman March 23, 2008.
See him tonight, October 11, 2010, with Paul Auster at the 92nd Street Y: http://bit.ly/cpVAnH

In March of 2008, as part of the Poetry Center’s Festival of Hebrew Literature, David Grossman appeared at 92Y for an interview with Adam Rovner. The conversation took place on a Sunday morning. That night, in Israel, Mr. Grossman’s new novel—Isha Borachat Mi-besorah—was published. Tonight, he returns to New York to read from the novel’s translation—To the End of the Land.

Today’s featured recording is an excerpt from that 2008 conversation, in which Mr. Grossman discusses To the End of the Land.

About the novel, Paul Auster—who will introduce and then interview Mr. Grossman at tonight’s reading—has said: “Flaubert created his Emma, Tolstoy made his Anna, and now we have Grossman’s Ora—as fully alive, as fully embodied as any character in recent fiction.” During the 2008 conversation, Mr. Grossman talked about “writing women”:

When I write about a woman, I do not think that I am writing about woman as a concept or as a state of mind or a state of body. I just tune myself totally—or as much as I can—to this character that I’m writing about, and I try to be absorbed by her to the utmost. I don’t know if something she does is feminine or masculine, I just don’t know it. I just know that for this specific character this is the right way to act. It is a very intuitive decision, the choices I make while I’m writing. I think that most of the women I write about are women I appreciate—unlike the men. The men I write about—usually I do not really appreciate them. The women I write about are stronger, deeper, more complex characters. They are less afraid of being in tight contact with reality, with their inner reality. Why is it like that? I have no idea. It has something to do with the fact that I feel that I myself was very much created or shaped—brought up—by women, enhanced more by women than by men. [In To the End of the Land], the main character is a woman, and she is the engine behind the whole book, and she motivates the men. Probably this is how I look at the world . . .

In an ongoing effort to share with our readers some of the great literary moments which the Poetry Center has presented across the decades, this blog has begun to feature regular postings of archival recordings. Was New Guggenheim Museum new york cancelled?

Was the New Guggenheim Museum New Nork by Frank Gehry cancelled?
This Question is about a plan of "New Guggenheim Museum New York" which designd by Frank Gehry in lower Manhattan.

Plans are at best on "hiatus" since 9-11. That may be just a convenient reason. The projected costs were such that there was no way it could earn its keep.

Why are there more divorces in the west, compared to east (asia, etc) ? What are the consequences of divorces ?

Why are there more divorces in the west, compared to east (asia, etc) ? What are the consequences of frequent divorces on society ?

because in asia it is a shame if a woman is divorced because it is a sign that she is unwanted, and the governments would actually convince women to stay with their violent and abusive husbands just so to create an illusion of harmony. this is what is in china.

I have a few questions about my dog?

1. Is it normal for a dog to be in labor a whole day?
2. How long does it take a puppy to come out?
3. Should I have the father visit the pups?
4. Is it safe to give them away at 8 weeks or 12 weeks?
5. Should I give the runt away or keep it?
6 How much should I sell a yorkie for?
7. If the dog trusts you will she trust you enough to handle her pups?
8. Should I let my 3 year old niece hold the pup or is it dangerous for the mommy to eat it?
9. Can I handle the puppies however I want?
10. Please read the description below.

Hi everyone. My name is Kaithlyeen. I know its a weird name. I am breeding my Yorkie Molly. I paid lots of money to research for diseases and make sure these puppies are very healthy. I live in Arizona in a huge house about 2000 square feet and a small yard. Lots of grass area.
I am a member of a kennel club and my Yorkie is an adopted Yorkie. I saved her from the animal shelter. She was abused since she was a new born and was taken away from her momma when she was about 1 week old. Now from this will she be aggressive with her puppies?
I brought her to the vet they said that her pregnancy has gone threw very healthy and she will most likely not need an emergency c – section.
I have done lots of research into breeding dogs and I’ve met with lots of vets and I’ve talked to lots of responsible breeders. She is about 2 days late is that a good sign or a bad sign? I also called my vet for all these questions and he answered them all I just wanted to know other people opinions. I am going to get my bi*ch spayed after this. So you don’t haft to worry about anything. I know after this I am going to keep one of the puppies and give the rest to family. To be exact is my daughter who is a Scottie breeder who has gave me lots of tips on breeding. My sister who I trust with my life and if there is more I have lots of family and close friends who will take very good care of them. If no one is going to take them I will keep them. I am interested in a small house with a giant backyard that me and my husband are going to be visiting next week.
Also I do understand about that millions of dogs die in shelters everyday! Please do not get me wrong! I do donate to shelters around my area! My whole family will not buy any animal from a breeder only shelters! Puppy mills are illegal and disgusting and I am totally against B.Y.B!
These puppies are going to be pure bred Yorkshire terriers!
Here is a link of my female!

http://thumb18.shutterstock.com.edgesuite.net/display_pic_with_logo/251191/251191,1246055330,3/stock-photo-cute-yorkshire-terrier-puppy-32718577.jpg

Here is the father when he was a puppy.

http://images.americanlisted.com/nlarge/teacup_yorkie_pups_for_free_adoption_10763856.jpg

I do not believe in ‘teacup’ dogs or ‘micro’ dogs. They are breeding runts with runts and it is animal cruelty to get what people want out of cute dogs that are meant to be the bigger size but want the smaller.

i\I have my vets phone number if anything goes wrong during birth and my daughter who breeds Scotties is down the street and I can afford to bring her to the vet. I can handle the responsibility.

Thank you.
Kait.

ok here goes….

1. labour should be a few hours

2. How long does it take a puppy to come out?
it depends – i have never been there while she was giving birth, we do just leave her to it and keep a close eye on her

3. Should I have the father visit the pups?
if it is your own dog and he is used to the mother, it is ok to let him see them. other wise there is no need

4. Is it safe to give them away at 8 weeks or 12 weeks?
7 weeks is the ideal age from what i read in an animal behaviourist’s book, but no sooner than that and after they are vaccinated, wormed and deflead

5. Should I give the runt away or keep it?
sell him, just keep him until 12 weeks, maybe don’t wean him until then [the others should be weaned from 6-7 weeks and have access to food before this to get them started]

6 How much should I sell a yorkie for?
i don’t know but here it is 350 euros, it depends on quality and if they have papers, with no papers the price would be 200-250

7. If the dog trusts you will she trust you enough to handle her pups?
she might not be herself just after giving birth so maybe just let her recover, but she will let you after that once she trusts you

8. Should I let my 3 year old niece hold the pup or is it dangerous for the mommy to eat it?
let her handle it away, mommy will not eat it

9. Can I handle the puppies however I want?
yes, but look at the caution on no.7. do not over handle them at the early stages, you could upset the mother, just let them do their thing and check they are all thriving. when they are born the first feed is the most important and check soon after that their bellies are fat with milk

10. Please read the description below.
2 days late might be fine as the tie could have happened, but fertilisation may not happen until a few days later. 64days is usually the accurate date after being covering

oh just on neutering – a misconception that many have is that their dog will be restless if she does not produce a litter. but anyways you made the decision, that is just to clarify that she would not be cos neutering is very important.

i think it was good that you wrote so much because if you just asked the question people would be attacking you for breeding….there are a lot of crazy people hanging round the dog section – one i was emailing maintained that it is wrong to breed pedigree dogs. baloney..

i just looked at the pic, she seems like a lovely yorkie

yes teacup breeding is wrong, and you have it exactly right. they have so much health problems through not developing correct and are more delicate. also runts are rare so there can be inbreeding going on (especially with non-registered ones). i remember a dog groomer telling me that she saw so called miniatures that had weebed feed but certainly that hides much bigger problems

but just on the miniature dogs well all toy breeds emerged from larger dogs -were they runts too?? i am just wondering. it is more likely that smaller pups were selected and not runts which gradually reduced their size but it is food for thought and is not discounting that teacup dogs is bad breeding, there has to be a limit on how small they go.

best of luck kait and i hope all goes well which i am sure it will
