Babajob.com_CITIES exhibition

default Babajob.com CITIES exhibition
2011. Created by Jaaga Media Center; produced by Babajob Services; directed by Clemence Barret and Archana Prasad; animated by Hannes Wagner. Courtesy of Babajob Services. Informal workers often find jobs through people they know, just as employers look to their social networks to find informal workers. Babajob.com, a social networking service, connects impoverished job seekers with employers and expands the reach of both jobs and job seekers, in many ways mimicking the network through which Indians find and fill jobs.

Designing Media: Jessie Scanlon

default Designing Media: Jessie Scanlon
One of 31 video segments featured in 'Designing Media', the new book, DVD and website by Bill Moggridge. More info on 'Designing Media' available at www.designing-media.com Jessie writes about design and innovation. In 2005 she joined Bruce Nussbaum at BusinessWeek.com as the senior writer and editor for Innovation and Design. She wanted to create a strong new offering that would be truly innovative and well designed, but she found that the limitations of the preexisting website made it impossible to achieve many of her goals early on. The offering has gradually evolved to represent the initiative more successfully. Jessie decided to try journalism when her grandfather said, "You seem to like writing." She had been studying Latin American politics and history, so she headed for Chile to give it a try, landing her first job at the South Pacific Mail in Santiago. She next joined Wired magazine, first as an intern and eventually becoming a contributing editor. Later she became a freelance writer, reporting on design and technology for ID, Popular Science, the New York Times, and Slate. In 2004 she was a writing fellow in the Simplicity program at MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Jessie is also the coauthor of Wired Style, a guide to writing and editing in the digital age.

Before 2000 Joel had a distinguished legal and political career with a recurring theme of opening closed systems to enhance participation. Joel and Al developed a concept to combine television broadcasting with participation by audience members, enabled by the Internet. In 2004 they purchased Newsworld International, a cable news channel programmed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation that aired news programming from around the world, and started to build a team in San Francisco. They relaunched the network as the Current TV platform on August 1, 2005, providing a news and information service that pioneered the concept of usergenerated content on cable and satellite TV.

Designing Media

default Designing Media
Mainstream media, often known simply as MSM, have not yet disappeared in a digital takeover of the media landscape. But the long-dominant MSM-television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and books-have had to respond to emergent digital media. Newspapers have interactive Web sites; television broadcasts over the Internet; books are published in both electronic and print editions. In Designing Media, Bill Moggridge examines connections and conflicts between old and new media, describing how the MSM have changed and how new patterns of media consumption are emerging. The book features interviews with thirty-seven people who have made significant creative contributions to the design and development of media, ranging from the publisher of the New York Times to the founder of Twitter. We learn about innovations that rely on contributions from a crowd (or a community), as told by Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales and Craigslist's Craig Newmark; how the band OK Go built a following using YouTube; how real-time connections between dispatchers and couriers inspired Twitter; how a BusinessWeek blog became a quarterly printed supplement to the magazine; and how e-readers have evolved. Ira Glass compares the intimacy of radio to that of the Internet; the producer of PBS's Frontline supports the program's investigative journalism by putting documentation of its findings online; and the developers of Google's Trendalyzer software describe its beginnings as animations that accompanied lectures about …

Bill’s Design Talk: Tangible Earth – Full Program

default Bills Design Talk: Tangible Earth Full Program
Includes more footage, such as additional technologies and questions from the audience. Professor Shinichi Takemura will demonstrate his magical Tangible Earth project, an interactive multimedia representation of our planet, presented on a glowing globe that shows our world in realtime view for daylight and weather patterns. He spins it with his hands as he explains the meaning of the images, calling up a series of events and predictions about ocean currents, tsunamis, global warming, earthquake patterns and so on. His demeanor is quiet and professorial, as he explains the richness of the scientific data that he has assimilated, making it instantly easy to understand. He succeeds in giving us a holistic vision of the state of our planet. Takemura – sensei is a producer known for his numerous cutting-edge IT-driven social activities, along with propounding his incisive views as an anthropologist. He is a professor at the Kyoto University of Art and Design, where he teaches anthropology, international relations, information society theory, etc. Prof. Takemura is engaged in the development of social information platforms, or what he calls "socialware," with the Earth Literacy Program, an NPO that runs as a base for his activities. In 2001, he conceived the Tangible Earth, in collaboration with scientists from various fields. For the first time in the US, participants will be able to see and experience the Tangible Earth at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.
